Type of observatory:
Near-infrared; optical

Description:
Launched in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and ESA. Regarded by many as one of the most valuable astronomical tools, Hubble orbits 360 miles above the Earth's surface. The telescope's 2.4-meter mirror collects incoming light and sends it to several instruments. Now nearing its nineteenth year of operations, Hubble's scientific powers have been extended several times by astronauts who installed sensitive new instruments. The final servicing mission to Hubble - planned for later this year - will upgrade the telescope and extend its life until at least 2014.
